The District School Gardens Network is planning to meet again on Wednesday, Nov. 14, at 4 p.m. The meeting will take place at Deering High School on the side of the building near the parking lot to hear about the Sustainability Club's plan to build a greenhouse! Then the meeting will move inside to Room 219.

The Portland Public Schools, working with Cultivating Community, is developing a districtwide School Garden Network to benefit all the district’s school gardens. The idea is to bring together folks involved in school gardens throughout the district to meet, collaborate, and strategize to make school garden initiatives stronger and more sustainable in Portland. The goal is to have every school garden represented – please spread the word!

An initial visioning meeting was held Oct. 3. It had a great turnout, with 23 people participating in the meeting. They included teachers, parents, community members and even a couple of Deering students. In all, 10 different PPS schools were represented!

Creating a School Garden Network is one of the ways to advance recommendations made to the Portland Board of Public Education this summer in the Food Fuels Learning Report from the Portland Public Schools Food Security Task Force.

The mission of Portland-based Cultivating Community is to grow sustainable communities by expanding access to healthy, local food; empower children, youth, and adults to play diverse roles in restoring the local, sustainable food systems; and to model, teach, and advocate for ecological food production.
