Peaks Island Elementary School (PIES) is hosting a community contra dance on Friday, May 18 – a fundraiser for the Peaks Island PTO After School Academy. The event will run from 6 pm. to 8 p.m. in the PIES gym, and costs $5 per person or $20 per family. The school is located at 4 Church Avenue.

PIES “Mathletes” won a $500 Painting for a Purpose grant to put on the dance, which includes live music. Mathletes are  members of the Math Team at Peaks, who met Friday mornings before school with Community Coordinator Ellen Mahoney as their math coach, and who then competed in a Math Meet this spring in Portland.

Music will be provided by Dan and Liz Faiella, a New Hampshire-based sibling folk duo that has captivated audiences at premier folk venues, contra dances, and festivals around New England. The pair has performed at Club Passim, the Boston Celtic Music Festival, the New England Folk Festival, Maine Celtic Celebration, and New Hampshire’s Seacoast Irish Festival. The contra dance will be called by Portland Intown Contra Dance's Dugan Murphy.

The purpose of the dance is to celebrate the school and the community, and to thank the community for their great show of support during the school budget process. A similar contra dance the school held this past November was a big success and was enjoyed by the community.

The community is invited to come and dance, listen, have a bite to eat and celebrate spring. Appropriate for all ages. No partner necessary. All proceeds support the enrichment programs offered by the Peaks Island PTO After School Academy.

Painting For A Purpose supports the power of young people to improve their schools and communities. It offers grants of up to $500 to help K-12 students in the Portland Public Schools carry out service learning projects.
