The Portland Education Foundation (PEF) has been awarded a $50,000 grant award from The Stephen & Tabitha King Foundation in response to a proposal entitled: Books and Literacy Resources for Portland Public Schools Grades PreK – Grade 5.

Books and Literacy Resources for Portland Public Schools Grades PreK – Grade 5 is a program designed to invest in books and literacy resources for all Portland Public Schools elementary school classroom libraries, school libraries and book closets. This program addresses a general lack of funding for books and literacy resources, helps to build collections that honor and celebrate culture and language differences, thereby helping to meet students where they are and bridge gaps between students from different backgrounds. This grant award catalyzes a districtwide approach to assessing book and literacy assets and needs across all public elementary schools in Portland.

“We know that students benefit greatly from having a variety of reading materials at different levels and genres. We rarely have the opportunity to make this level of investment in classroom libraries,” said Portland Public Schools (PPS) Superintendent Xavier Botana. “We are very grateful to The Stephen and Tabitha King Foundation for their generous gift.”

To support schools in book selection, Portland Public Schools is building an internal resource of both reference lists for book selection, as well as specific titles with diverse themes and representation. These resources are meant to support book selection, but not to be limiting.

The program budget articulates investment at each of Portland’s elementary schools based on the per pupil count at the time of grant writing.

“We are thrilled to be able to support programming within PPS. The grant award from The Stephen and Tabitha King Foundation is a wonderful example of how Portland Education Foundation works to generate community engagement and support for our schools.” - Mary Bennett, PEF Board President.

Portland Education Foundation’s mission is to raise philanthropic support to enhance educational opportunities for present and future students in Portland’s public schools. PEF’s vision is to strengthen schools through community investment.
