Portland Superintendent Xavier Botana delivered the following remarks to the Portland Board of Public Education at its Nov. 15 meeting:

"The result of last Tuesday’s Presidential election has intensified the fear already felt by many Americans. It has shaken their sense of place in this community and this country. What concerns us most as educators is the anxiety and apprehension exhibited by many schoolchildren. President-elect Trump’s acceptance speech urged Americans to come together. Considering the divisive tone that marked his campaign, that is a hopeful sign.

As a school system, we believe that our diversity is one of our greatest assets. We teach students to appreciate and value our differences. I want to reaffirm our commitment to keeping the Portland Public Schools as an institution that tolerates different viewpoints and perspectives, respects everyone’s humanity, and values what each of us brings as unique and important. At the same time, we will take forceful action whenever instances of hate or intimidation occur in our places of learning.

We will endeavor to help all of our students – regardless of their national origin, race, religion, home language, mental or physical abilities, gender identification, or sexual orientation – to feel safe, welcome and included in our Portland Public Schools community.

We will do our best today and every day to ensure that our children, our families and the Portland Public Schools live up to the ideals that are the foundation of our country."
