Two art shows featuring work by Portland Public Schools’ students will be on display during the city’s First Friday Art Walk on May 6.

One is the Portland Public Schools’ Annual Student Art Show at Portland City Hall. The other is the First Annual Regional High School Art Show, hosted by Casco Bay Artisans, a local art gallery.

At the City Hall event, the work of approximately 650 talented Portland Public Schools’ students in kindergarten through grade 12 is being exhibited during this year’s show, which began April 28 and runs through Wednesday, May 18. Visitors can see creative and compelling works from each grade level and also get a sense of students’ growing artistic capabilities as they mature.

The show is open to the public. General building hours for City Hall, located at 389 Congress St., are from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. However, the building also will be open until 8 p.m. on May 6 for the First Friday Art Walk so that the public can enjoy the show during that event.

The opening reception for the First Annual Regional High School Art Show at Casco Bay Artisans (CBA), an international, eclectic fine art gallery, will take place on First Friday, May 6, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The gallery is located at 68 Commercial St., The Maine Wharf.

The show, which runs through Wednesday, May 11, was organized and curated by students for students. Seventeen regional high schools are participating in the show, including Portland High School and the Portland Arts and Technology High School (PATHS).

“This is an opportunity for high school art students to learn the process of being selected to show in a professional art gallery, from submission to curation to sell point," said CBA owner, Jen Swarts. "Soon, these students will be applying to colleges where this experience will prove beneficial in creating their college essays and to begin to assemble their portfolios.”

Two Portland High School students, Grace Cox and Ellie Zukowski, have been working as interns at CBA, through the Jobs for Maine’s Graduates Internship Program, and are student curators of the show.

Ellie and Grace said, “As PHS student interns, working on this project with CBA has been particularly rewarding knowing we are giving other high school students a special opportunity to show and sell their artwork in an art gallery.”

Eric Moynihan, director of the Jobs For Maine Graduates Internship Program at Portland High School, said, “We have received such an overwhelming response from high schools in our region that PHS and CBA intend to repeat next year. But for now, with this first attempt, we are very proud of Grace’s and Ellie's hard work in paving the way for the next group of interns."
