The Portland Public Schools has set new start and end times for most of the district’s elementary schools and two of its middle schools for the upcoming 2016-2017 school year.

The schedule changes are necessary to enable the district’s school buses to get students to and from school in a more timely manner. This year, some students had long wait times before a school bus could take them home at the end of the school day. Also, in the mornings, some buses had to drop children off at school too far in advance of those schools’ start times.

The time adjustments for the new school year are designed to ensure that buses are waiting when students are dismissed from school and that buses won’t arrive at school more than 15 minutes before school starts in the morning.

High school bell schedules won’t change – they’ll keep the same 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. schedule that they have this year. The Portland Arts and Technology High School (PATHS) also will retain its current schedule: an 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. morning session and an 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. afternoon session.

King Middle School won’t see changes – it will have the same 7:55 a.m. to 2:25 p.m. schedule it has this year. Riverton Elementary School also will retain this year’s 8:20 a.m. to 2:50 p.m. schedule. There will be no changes in the schedules of the island schools, on Peaks and Cliff.

The following schools will have new bell schedules (the new schedules and the time change from their 2015-2016 schedule are listed):

Lincoln Middle School: 7:45 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. (10 minutes earlier)

Lyman Moore Middle School: 7:45 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. (10 minutes earlier)

East End Community School:  8:10 a.m. to 2:50 p.m. (30 minutes earlier)

Longfellow Elementary School: 8:20           a.m. to 2:50 p.m. (20 minutes earlier)

Presumpscot Elementary School: 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. (10 minutes earlier)

Ocean Avenue Elementary School: 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. (10 minutes later)

Hall Elementary School: 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (20 minutes later)

Reiche Elementary School: 9 a.m. to            3:30 p.m. (20 minutes later)

Lyseth Elementary School: 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (20 minutes later)

Bayside Learning Center:  7:30 a.m. to 1:40 p.m. (50 minutes earlier)

The bell schedule changes were approved by district administration in consultation with school building leaders. They were presented to the Portland Board of Public Education at a workshop session on May 10.

The new schedules are designed to enable school buses to meet the following goals:

• Buses will arrive at school and start unloading within 15 minutes of start times.

• Buses will conclude the unloading process within 5 minutes of start times, except East End that requests unloading to occur as close as possible to the morning start time.

• Buses will be waiting for students prior to end times.

• Buses will depart with all students not later than 10 minutes of end times.
