The Portland Board of Public Education and Interim Superintendent Jeanne Crocker recently recognized six Portland Public Schools’ students who achieved recognition for their work in the national 2016 Scholastic Writing Awards for the Maine Region.

Honored at the board’s  March 1 meeting were Casco Bay High School juniors Yann Tanguay Irambona (Gold Key winner) and Maryse Dushime (Silver Key winner) and freshman Liam Swift (Gold Key winner); Portland High School seniors Clautel Buba and Blakey Bessire (both Silver Key winners); and Lyman Moore Middle School 7th grader William Ferros, who received Honorable Mention. He was one of the few 12-year-olds to receive recognition.

This year, Maine students in grades 7-12 sent a total of 354 submissions to The Scholastic Writing Awards. Of those submissions, 31 Gold Keys were awarded to the most accomplished works from Maine and those writings will be forwarded to the national level. In addition, 59 Silver Keys were awarded to distinguished works from Maine and 70 Honorable Mentions were awarded to notable works from Maine.
