The Portland Public Schools on Wednesday, March 2, will again participate in Read Across America, the National Education Association’s annual celebration of reading that honors the March 2nd birthday of Theodor Seuss Geisel, known as Dr. Seuss.

This year marks the 19th national Read Across America. The program engages an estimated 45 million educators, parents, and students nationwide with school and community celebrations coast to coast.

NEA members and schools across the nation host school and community events on March 2 designed to pay homage to the beloved children’s book author and get young people excited about reading. Portland’s public schools are hosting numerous “celebrity” readers who will read aloud to children throughout the day.

For example, at Ocean Avenue Elementary School, Maine Red Claws President Dajuan Eubanks and two Red Claws players will read to students, as will Portland Symphony Orchestra Assistant Conductor Norman Huyhn. Portland Mayor Ethan Strimling and Portland Police Chief Michael Sauschuck are among those reading at Hall Elementary School and some students there will use Skype to do a “buddy read” of a Dr. Seuss book with some students in Portland, Oregon. School Board Chair Marnie Morrione will be among those reading at Lyseth Elementary School and Portland Interim Superintendent Jeanne Crocker and other school leaders will be reading at a variety of schools, as will a number of local television personalities.
