King Middle School orchestra students distinguished themselves on March 18, performing at a ceremony in which 31 new Americans were sworn in as U.S. citizens.

“This was the first time the King Middle School orchestra musicians performed at this citizenship ceremony at U.S. federal court,” said Julianne Eberl, Portland Public Schools’ orchestra teacher. They were absolutely wonderful!”

Eberl said the event also marked the 28th time she has brought PPS students to perform at a citizenship ceremony. She said the federal court in Portland hosts such ceremonies twice a year, in September and March. She has the high school orchestra play at the September event but has started inviting PPS middle school orchestras to play at the March event. In March 2015, the Lincoln Middle School Select Orchestra performed at the ceremony.

This year, King student musicians took center stage.

Prior to the ceremony, the King students played for approximately 20 minutes, using music to welcome the citizens, their families and guests, who included representatives of the League of Women Voters, Daughters of the American Revolution, and others, Eberl said. “The repertory included Irish Suite (in honor of St. Patrick's Day); ‘My Favorite Things,’ from ‘The Sound of Music;’ Argentinian tango music, ‘Moonlight Tango;’ and ‘Can You Feel the Love Tonight,’ she said. “We ran out of time to play the ‘Downton Abbey Suite!’”

Immediately after the swearing in of the new citizens, the King Beethoven Ensemble performed “The Star Spangled Banner;” “America”, which is also known as “My Country ‘Tis of Thee;” and “America the Beautiful,” Eberl said.

“I decided to introduce the King ensemble to this ceremony due to the outstanding musicians in the Beethoven Ensemble. This is in line with the expeditionary learning model at King Middle School, with the students being an integral part of the ceremony,” she added.
