Portland High School recently received national certification for its Project Lead The Way (PLTW) engineering program, which it has been offering since 2013.

“We’ve seen how the PLTW engineering classes inspire students to think critically and problem solve,” said Rosalee Lamm, PLTW teacher at PHS. “We are extremely proud to be PLTW certified.”

PLTW is a nonprofit that provides a transformative learning experience for K-12 students and teachers. PLTW Engineering empowers students to step into the role of an engineer, adopt a problem-solving mindset, and make the leap from dreamers to doers.

The national PLTW recognition distinguishes schools for successfully demonstrating a commitment to PLTW’s national standards.

Principal Deborah Migneault said the program “draws more students to engineering, math and science and gets them thinking about college and their careers.”

As part of the recognition process, Lamm, Migneault and guidance counselor Johannah Burdin submitted a self-assessment of the school’s implementation of PLTW Engineering, followed by a site visit from Mary Laturnau, a PLTW representative.

Laturnau met with teachers, school administrators, counselors, students and members of the school’s PLTW Advisory Committee. The PLTW Advisory Committee’s job is to actively support the PLTW program at PHS, and is comprised of representatives from the education and business community, including IDEXX, USM, Colby Company Engineering, Growing Portland, Manufacturer’s Association of Maine, and Louis Berger.

“Congratulations to Portland High School, and thank you for your commitment to students,” said PLTW President and CEO Vince Bertram. “We look forward to continuing to work together to prepare students to thrive in our evolving world.”
