Ocean Avenue Elementary School students and art teachers – as well as teachers and students from Hall, Longfellow, Lyseth and Riverton elementary schools and Deering High School and the Portland Arts and Technology High School – have been partnering with Rosemont Market & Bakery on a mural project for Rosemont’s Brighton Avenue store – and now it’s time to celebrate!

The Greater Portland community is invited to Rosemont Mural Project Open House on Sunday, June 12, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the store, located at 580 Brighton Avenue, to showcase the murals. The mural artwork consists of seven panels on the outside of the building that depict Portland’s agrarian history.

The public will get a chance to view the newly installed murals. The student artists will have their photos taken next to their mural and receive a token of appreciation and a certificate.

The event will include information and outreach in support of the Portland Education Foundation (PEF). PEF is an independent nonprofit organization that is officially aligned with the Portland Public Schools and is committed to raising philanthropic support to enhance education in the city’s public schools.

The Rosemont Mural Project has been a two-year collaboration between Rosemont Market and art teachers and students throughout Portland. Spearheaded by Simon Williams, an educational technician at Ocean Avenue Elementary School, the impetus for the mural project came from Williams’ desire to energize Portland youth to contribute meaningfully to their community and to call attention to the impact Portland Public Schools’ art programs can have on enriching life in Portland neighborhoods.

In keeping with Rosemont Market’s mission to educate consumers about the benefits of purchasing local foods, students’ artwork for the mural focuses on Portland’s agrarian role in local history.
