The Portland Board of Public Education will hold a public hearing on Tuesday, Dec. 20, on a proposed update to the Portland Public Schools’ Comprehensive Plan. The hearing will begin at 6 p.m. in the Lyman Moore Middle School cafeteria. Following the public hearing, the board will hold an executive session and afterwards begin its business meeting.

The Comprehensive Plan is a road map that aligns the district’s work with its mission and vision. It was completed in 2011, but it was deliberately designed to last only five years – until 2016 – so it could be updated to meet the evolving needs of the district.

“We encourage Portland Public Schools’ families and other community members to attend the public hearing and give us your feedback on this proposed Comprehensive Plan update,” said Portland Superintendent Xavier Botana. “The plan is an important blueprint that guides student learning in the Portland Public Schools. The voices of community stakeholders are essential in developing the best plan to meet our district’s needs.”

The district’s vision and mission in the Comprehensive Plan will remain unchanged; the proposed changes involve goals that represent that vision and mission, how the district organizes to meet those goals, and how it measures and reports progress toward them.

The district’s vision is: “All learners will be fully prepared to participate and succeed in a diverse and ever-changing world.” The mission states: “The Portland Public Schools are responsible for ensuring a challenging, relevant, and joyful education that empowers every learner to make a difference in the world. We build relationships among families, educators and the community to promote the healthy development and academic achievement of every learner.”

The school board this summer charged the superintendent with leading the update. He met throughout the fall with teachers, administrators and community partners and experts. Together, they identified four goals for the plan, developed key strategies for meeting those goals and refined the ways in which the district will measure and report its progress toward them.

The draft goals focus on four areas: Achievement; Whole Student; Equity; and People. To view the strategic Comprehensive Plan draft document, click here.

Following the public hearing, the proposed updates to the plan will come before the school board for endorsement at its Jan. 3, 2017 meeting. The district also is in the process of developing a process for communicating about the Comprehensive Plan to families and the wider community on an ongoing basis.

Also on Tuesday, Dec. 20, the public is invited to a tour of Lyman Moore Middle School prior to the school board meeting. The tour of the school, located at 171 Auburn St., will begin at 6 p.m. When the board meets at a school, tours of the facility are offered to give the public the opportunity to view the building, see examples of student work on the walls and hear about the learning opportunities the school offers.
