Students in the Portland Arts and Technology High School (PATHS) Woodworking Program are the recipients of the first Painting For A Purpose grant award for the 2016-2017 school year.

The students received $500 to purchase a lathe to make wooden bowls. They are learning to make bowls as part of the national "Empty Bowls" project. All proceeds from sales of their bowls will go towards fighting hunger. They will be partnering with Rockler Woodworking and Hardware and the Good Shepherd Food Bank.

Painting for a Purpose is a local nonprofit organization that brings together artists, parents, students and educators to create and sell original art and objects for the home, many refurbished out of old furniture. All proceeds raised by Painting for a Purpose are invested in community initiatives that Portland Public Schools’ students propose and complete.

Painting for a Purpose has $7,000 available for youth-led service learning grants for K-12 Portland Public Schools students. For more information, visit paintingforapurpose.net
