The Portland Board of Public Education and Superintendent Xavier Botana recently recognized two students recently for their achievements in the sport of boxing.

The recognition took place at the board’s Dec. 6 meeting.

Botana made the following remarks about Deering High School senior Gabriel “Tito” Morales and Lincoln Middle School seventh-grader Barry Wilson, who is Tito’s sibling:

“Tito Morales is a member of the Portland Boxing Club, and this fall he won the USA Boxing New England Featherweight Championship with a close, hard-fought unanimous decision win. Tito, who is ranked sixth in the nation, is now at USA Boxing’s National Championship, being held this week in Kansas City, Missouri, which is why he isn’t able to be with us tonight. In fact, he has already won an exciting match on the first night of competition in the Youth Male 123-pound division.

Earlier this year, Tito won the New England Golden Gloves boxing championship in the novice class. Tito is to be commended for his drive and determination and we wish him all the best.

Also, the Portland Boxing Club’s Barry Wilson recently scored a unanimous decision over a very tough and determined opponent in the USA Boxing New England tournament. This past February, Barry became the New England Junior Champion in his 90-pound weight class. Barry is also a standout at Lincoln Middle School, where his teachers describe him as a team player who is a strong, positive role model for his peers. They said he is mature, extremely respectful and well liked by his teachers and fellow students. Congratulations, Barry, and keep up the good work!”
