The BARQUE singers of Portland High School, a boys à cappella group, performed with the classic rock band Foreigner at a benefit concert in Rangeley on July 30.

“This was an amazing opportunity for the BARQUE singers of PHS. The group consisted of seniors Ryan Lizanecz, George Chaison-Lapine, Ryan Donaldson, Timmy McInnis, Cameron Goff, Ben Griffin and Teddy Crocket,” said Phil Thibault, director of BARQUE and also the school’s Latin and French teacher. “On stage, these young men were poised and sang, “I Want to Know What Love Is,” as if they'd been rock stars forever.”

Thibault added, “This event took months to realize, starting with our audition early in 2016.”

The benefit concert took place at the Rangeley Wellness Pavilion and raised money to support programs and services provided by the Rangeley Health and Wellness Partnership to residents and visitors in western Maine.

The PHS singers also worked in the merchandise tent, selling CDs to benefit Hunger for Music, a charitable organization providing musical instruments to needy students, Thibault said.

PHS Assistant Principal Kathleen Marquis-Girard, who grew up in Rangeley, said, “It was great fun and wonderful to show off some of our talented students to my hometown! I couldn't have been prouder. It takes a village … Phil made arrangements with the Foreigner PR folks, handled the van like a driving pro – no small feat as concert parking was a crazy affair – and he managed to find the venue and lodging without getting lost or hitting any wildlife on the back roads.”

Thibault said the students in the group are now headed to college – at Bates College, Fordham University, Tufts University, the University of Southern Maine and the University of Maine at Orono – where they all plan to join men's à cappella groups.
