Sept. 14 Forum to Focus on Preparing Students for College
Posted on 09/08/2015
Two Portland Public Schools’ educators are slated to participate in an upcoming public forum that will focus on public schooling, higher education, and Maine’s economic future.

The First Parish Public Forum, titled “EDUCATING Portland’s Future,” will be held on Monday, Sept. 14, at the First Parish of Portland church, located at 425 Congress St. The event starts with a 5:30 p.m. reception and the discussion will run from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. The event, sponsored by the First Parish of Portland Faith in Action Committee, is free and open to the public. Students, educators and other community members are encouraged to attend.

Among the panelists will be Derek Pierce, principal of Casco Bay High School, a small and rigorous public high school within the Expeditionary Learning network; and Alison Perkins, an ELL teacher and professional development specialist with the Portland Public Schools.

The discussion will be moderated by Ralph Carmona, an adjust professor at Southern Maine Community College.

Carmona said the forum will focus on how to better prepare the increasingly diverse and multicultural student population of Portland for post-secondary education – which is now a necessity going into the future.

In addition to Pierce and Perkins, the other panelists are: Tony Cipollone, Ph.D., President and CEO, John T. Gorman Foundation; Glenn Cummings, Ed.D., President, University of Southern Maine; and Ron Cantor, Ph.D. President, Southern Maine Community College.
