On warm days, Peaks Island youngsters engage in a rite of passage they call the “dock jump,” in which they leap from the ferry pier into the cold waters of Casco Bay. On Sept. 19, teachers from Peaks Island Elementary School took a dock jump to herald the start of the new school year – as their students watched.

“In celebration of a great school year startup, Peaks Elementary School teachers Charlie Marenghi, Zoe Ryan-Humphrey and Kelly Mascolo took the plunge into the cold Atlantic waters from the Peaks Island ferry pier,” said Renee Bourgoine-Serio, teacher leader for the Peaks Island and Cliff Island schools. “Seeing their favorite teachers take the leap was a huge hit for students on a warm Friday afternoon.”

Bourgoine-Serio has promised her own dock jump celebration when Peaks Island students have documented a total of 500 hours of reading.
