This month, the Deering and Portland high school field hockey teams have decided to dedicate their regular season rivalry to supporting the family of a Deering player whose mother is battling breast cancer. As a fundraising activity, the teams will hold a Play4theCure game on Monday, Sept. 14, starting at 5 p.m. at Deering High School.

The game will be dedicated to Shelly DiBiase. She is the mother of Deering player Kaytlin DiBiase. Kaytlin’s older sister, Kiana DiBiase, graduated from DHS and also played field hockey and Shelly DiBiase is an enthusiastic supporter of the Deering program. Kaytlin DiBiase is a close friend of the goalie on the Portland High School field hockey team so the two programs agreed that it was only right to honor Shelly and her family by playing this rival “Shelly's Game Play4theCure” and raising cancer awareness.

“We thought it would be a great way to show our support to the DiBiase family,” said Elizabeth Koharian, a Deering health teacher and the DHS varsity field hockey coach.

In Shelly DiBiase’s honor, the teams are raising money through Play4theCure, the sports fundraising program of the National Foundation for Cancer Research. All of the proceeds will be put towards cancer research. Donations can be made at: https://www.crowdrise.com/ShellysGamePlay4theCure

Donations also will be accepted at the game (cash or check only), and there will be baked goods and t-shirts for sale at the game.
