A panel of experts will lead a discussion at Deering High School this week about the role of religion in the challenges and solutions that face our world today.

Speakers on the panel at the 12:45 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. Nov. 10 event will be Imam Yahya Hendi, Muslim chaplain at Georgetown University; Auxiliary Bishop Arthur Kennedy of  the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Boston; and Rabbi David Sandmel, a founding rabbi of South Portland’s Congregation Bet Ha'am. The speakers are known internationally for their efforts to create a climate of interreligious cooperation challenging religious extremism and hatred.

Deering students in history, global issues, human rights, literature and English language arts classes, along with students from neighboring high schools, will engage in conversation with the guests.

At 7 p.m. that same day, the speakers will present an “Interreligious Dialogue in a Time of Conflict” at the University of Southern Maine’s Hannaford Hall.

The event at Deering is part of the high school’s global focus as an International Studies School with The Asia Society. The discussion will be student-moderated.
