Jane McLucas, who is experienced in food service and nutrition, is the Portland Public Schools’ new food service director. Interim Portland Superintendent Jeanne Crocker announced McLucas’ appointment at the Portland Board of Public Education meeting Nov. 3.

“I’m very excited to be here,” McLucas told the board. “I look forward to feeding the students of the Portland Public Schools.”

Most recently, McLucas was the food service director for the Norwood Public Schools in Norwood, Mass. During her tenure at Norwood, the middle school received recognition as a HealthierUS Challenge School. At Norwood, McLucas integrated a point of sale (POS) system and started breakfast programs at all of the schools.

During the 2012-2013 school year, McLucas served as president of the School Nutrition Association of Massachusetts. That experience exposed her to many programs in the state; involved her in many of the challenges presented by the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, a federal statute that set new nutrition standards for schools; and polished her public relations skills.

Prior to her time in Norwood, McLucas worked in the college food service environment at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Brandeis University, as well as working for a small catering company in Milford, Mass.

McLucas earned a bachelor’s degree in hotel, restaurant and institutional management from Johnson & Wales University in Providence, R.I.

Ron Adams, the Portland Public Schools’ former food service director, departed the district to work in the private sector.
