The Portland  Board of Public Education and Interim Portland Superintendent Jeanne Crocker recently recognized the fifth graders at Lyseth Elementary School for their efforts to combat bullying.

October was National Bullying Prevention Month and Lyseth students showed their true colors when it comes to fighting bullying by wearing orange on Oct. 21 – Unity Day. The students encouraged everyone in Portland to wear orange too.

Fifth-graders at the school took ownership to spread the word.  They wanted to take a leadership role in making Unity Day happen. Their ultimate goal was to show the importance of being an “upstander,” not a bystander.

The students did a number of things to publicize their important message including writing letters to all city offices; Portland Public Schools’ Central Office administrators and schools; local businesses, radio and television stations; and local newspapers. They created posters, which were on display at Lyseth, area business, local schools, and city offices. They also asked all classrooms to create an orange paper chain to connect throughout the school to show their support of Unity Day.

“The event was, once again this year, a huge success and we are proud to have such dedicated, caring students acting as upstanders, not bystanders, on such an important topic!” Crocker said.
