Maine Sen. Justin Alfond visited the Spanish immersion kindergarten and first-grade classrooms at Lyseth Elementary School on Oct. 27. The program is the first of its kind at a public school in Maine and Alfond, Democratic leader of the Maine Senate, wanted to learn more about immersion education and programming and see the students in action.

Lyseth is now in its second year of the Spanish Immersion Program. This year, it added a first-grade class taught by Pedro Zamarro. Spanish teacher Susana Balasch is back for a second year as the kindergarten Spanish Immersion teacher. Starting Oct. 1, Carlos Domínguez of the Canary Islands became the new Spanish language and culture assistant, through May 31.

Domínguez will spend most of his time assisting with the immersion program at Lyseth, but is available as a resource to other schools in the district and beyond. Lyseth is one of just 30 schools in the United States and Canada to be awarded such as an assistant as part of the Spanish Visiting Teacher Program.
