Claire Crocker and Zachary Brown, two eighth-grade math teachers at Lincoln Middle School, were honored by the Portland Board of Public Education and Interim Superintendent Jeanne Crocker at the board’s Nov. 3 meeting.

The two teachers were invited to be instructors for a new cohort of Tufts University Poincaré Institute teachers in Everett, Mass. The mission of this cohort is to improve the teaching and learning of middle school mathematics by helping teachers deepen their understanding of key mathematical concepts and of how students learn.

They are the only Portland teachers to be invited to join this cohort and will be working (mostly online) to assist other teachers with the coursework, and help give them feedback about the work they submit. Jeanne Crocker noted that one of the professors at Tufts “spoke very highly of all the Lincoln teachers that participated and was very impressed with their achievements, effort and professionalism. Claire and Zack are a great example of the high quality teaching staff we have both at Lincoln and in our district.”

Crocker praised the pair’s accomplishment and added, “Thank you for representing the district so beautifully.”
