Lyman Moore Middle School educators Catherine Siegel, Cori Modisette, Elizabeth Guillereault and Sarah Carlson were recently recognized by the Portland Board of Public Education and Interim Superintendent Jeanne  Crocker for spearheading the start up of a Civil Rights Team at Moore this year. The recognition took place at the board’s Nov. 3 meeting.

Crocker said, “Thanks to these four dedicated staff, the students at Moore are excited by this work and are looking forward to seeing the outcome.”

It has been many years since a Civil Rights Team has existed at the school. But Siegel said one is needed to meet the school’s goal that all members of the Lyman Moore community feel safe, secure, valued, and respected at all times and that all have equitable success in the learning environment.

In October, Brandon Baldwin, the state coordinator for the Civil Rights Team Project gave a moving presentation to the school. Siegel said, “We learned about what bias means and how we can work together as a community to educate, empower, and encourage our students to support each other and help end bias behaviors. The Civil Rights Team will think and talk about issues of bias related to race, skin color, national origin, ancestry, religion, disabilities, gender, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic status. The team will actively educate our school community related to these issues to further the goal of our school.”

After student training in November, the school will have a “full-fledged and functioning team,” Siegel said. “We are super excited!

More than 30 staff and students are involved in the team.
