The Portland Board of Public Education and Interim Superintendent Jeanne Crocker honored King Middle School technology education teacher Gus Goodwin at the board’s Nov. 3  meeting.

Crocker described Goodwin in this way:

Gus is a super-talented teaching veteran who has taught at King Middle School for the past 22 years. His title is that of a technology education teacher and his focus is on teaching the real world applications of design and engineering for eighth-grade students.

Gus has a fascinating education background outside of our schools.  He was awarded a spot in the week-long "Wind Senator" course where he studied wind energy and its applications at the College of the Atlantic.  He also received a Fund for Teachers grant, which allowed him to study at Harvard in the Project Zero program for teachers, where he studied under Howard Gardiner and Steve Seidel, both world-renowned educators. The course he took focused on "teaching for understanding," which is at the core of Gus' work with students.

Projects and lessons from these extended education opportunities have been integrated in Gus' everyday project-based program at King. Tonight we are here to recognize Gus for winning a $10,000 grant to hold a two day professional development workshop for teachers.

The workshop, "Think, Tinker and Inspire" was scheduled to take place on Nov. 5 and 6 at the Open Bench Project, a new learn/work facility at Thompson's Point in Portland.
