Two DHS Students Finalists in Prestigious Poetry Festival
Posted on 05/21/2015

Two Deering High School students, junior Ciham Tum and senior Courtney Valente, were selected as finalists in the 7th Annual Merriconeag Poetry Festival, held earlier this month.

Each year, the Merriconeag Poetry Festival invites high school students from Cumberland, Androscoggin and Sagadahoc counties to submit their work. This year's judge, nationally renowned poet Jeffrey Harrison, selected only 20 students' poems from 110 submissions received.

The festival took place on May 3 at the Merriconeag Waldorf School in Freeport, where all twenty finalists read their poems. All the finalists received gift certificates and a booklet that contains all of the selected poems.

“The fact that these two young women's poems were chosen is a huge honor for the students, the school and the district,” said Shana Genre, DHS English and creative writing teacher.
