It was Civil Rights Day at Hadlock Field earlier this month and the Riverton Civil Rights Team was among those honored by the Portland Sea Dogs at the May 8 event.

Teams from around the state attended but Riverton Elementary School’s team stands out as being one of the largest such teams in Maine, said Amanda Atkinson-Lewis, Riverton social worker. She and teacher Teddy Valencia are co-administrators of the school’s Civil Rights Team.

Riverton School's name was displayed on the big screens at the stadium.

“The students were honored for their hard work in breaking down barriers related to bias and discrimination in our school and community,” Atkinson-Lewis said. “The team has been working hard all year through journalism, mentoring, cultural study and celebration, art, dance, and writing to promote a school and community culture where we learn about and celebrate our differences.”

Brandon Baldwin, who runs the state’s Civil Rights Team Project through the Maine Attorney General's Office, also attended and spoke to the whole crowd about what great work the Civil Rights Teams have been doing and the importance of having such teams.
