The second annual Hyper Heart 5k Race will take place on Saturday, May 30 – thanks to two Lyman Moore Middle School eighth-graders concerned about heart health.

The race is a local event created by students Karina Boothe and Lauren Paradise to raise funds for research and awareness for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a heart condition that has affected their families.

Proceeds from the race support the American Heart Association to cover testing, research, and treatment expenses for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, which is a heart condition that involves a thickened heart muscle.

Last year, participants and donors gave $1,600 to the American Heart Association. Because of its success, the race is now an annual event.

The Hyper Heart 5k is a walk/run. Participants should gather at Lyman Moore, located at 171 Auburn Street. The course runs through nearby neighborhoods.

The race will start at 9 a.m., but all participants are advised to arrive beforehand for registration and check-in. The event is expected to end around 11 a.m. The race will be held rain or shine.

Registration fees are as follows:

*6 and under: $10

*Ages 7-14: $15

*Over 14 years: $20

For the first 35 race participants, the race fee will include a T-shirt. Anyone who signs up after that will have to pay an extra $5 for a race shirt. Food and drinks will be provided, courtesy of a donation from Dunkin' Donuts.

The Hyper Heart 5k is unable to take credit cards, so only cash, and checks made payable to the American Heart Association, will be accepted.

Participants can reserve their spot early by contacting hyperheart5k@gmail.com.
