The Portland Public Schools’ Multilingual and Multicultural Center will be hosting its first World Language Coffeehouse this week to raise funds for the district’s World Language programs. The event, which features world music, also will give PPS students an opportunity to “show off” the richness of the district's language and cultural diversity.

The event will take place Wednesday, May 27, from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Woodfords Club, located at 179 Woodfords St. in Portland. Food and beverages will be available. Suggested donation is $5 to $10.

Native English-speaking students who are learning other languages have been invited to perform in the language they are acquiring. Students who speak a native language other than English are invited to perform in their native languages.

Other featured performers include members of Olas, a Portland-based music and dance group; Britta Pejic et sa Band de Con, a South Portland-based rock/pop group; the Maine Marimba Ensemble; and Glen DaCosta, former saxophone player for Bob Marley and the Wailers.

Sponsors include: Coffee By Design; Creative Trails; Aurora Provisions; Lemongrass; Ten Ten Pie; Rotary Club of Portland Maine; Wildflours Gluten-Free Bakey; Portland Arts and Technology High School Culinary Program; Tortilleria Pachanga; Five Seasons Cooking School; and Galley Goodies.

The district’s World Language programs include Spanish immersion, classical language, European language, critical language and also an Early Start language program.
