Council Sends School Budget to Voters May 12
Posted on 05/05/2015

The Portland City Council on May 4 unanimously approved a $102,776,657 school budget for the 2015-2016 school year. The fiscal year 2016 school budget now goes to Portland voters in a citywide referendum on Tuesday, May 12.

The Portland Board of Public Education unanimously approved the school budget in March before sending it to the council for bottom line approval.

“This budget puts students first, in such ways as an expansion of pre-kindergarten education, which is critical to student success. It also invests in our staff through professional development and a competitive wage,” said Portland Public Schools Superintendent Emmanuel Caulk. “The budget also is mindful of taxpayers. It contains only a modest expenditure increase of less than 1.2 percent, despite a drastic cut in state education funding and a shift in the cost of teacher retirement from the state to local districts like ours. I urge the community to support this school budget to ensure that all Portland students have a pathway to success.”

All local polling places will be open May 12 from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. for the school budget vote. More detailed information about where or how to vote can be found by contacting the City Clerk’s office at 874-8677 or visiting www.portlandvoters.com.
