Four students from the Portland Public Schools have qualified to compete in the 2015 Maine Geographic Bee on March 27 at the University of Maine at Farmington.

The bee is open to students in grades 4 through 8. Top winners at the school level who pass a qualifying test have been invited to compete at the state level.

The Portland students are: Charlie Brewer, a fourth-grader at Lyseth Elementary School; Ava Spach, an eighth-grader at Lincoln Middle School; Joe Harrington, an eighth-grader from King Middle School; and Hayden O'Donnell, an eighth-grader from Lyman Moore Middle School.

Each year thousands of schools in the United States participate in the National Geographic Bee using materials prepared by the National Geographic Society. The entertaining and challenging contest is designed to inspire students to be curious about the world.

The state winner gets a chance to represent Maine in the national competition of the Geo Bee, which will be held May 11-13, 2015, at the National Geographic Society’s headquarters in Washington, D.C. It will be televised on May 15, 2015, at 8 p.m. on the National Geographic Channel and NG Wild.

The winner of the national competition will receive a $50,000 scholarship, a lifetime subscription to National Geographic magazine, a Galápagos trip, and $500 cash. The second-place winner receives a $25,000 scholarship and $500 cash. The third-place winner receives a $10,000 scholarship and $500 cash. The fourth- through 10th-place winners receive $500 cash each.
