A nationally recognized author and short-story writer is teaching creative writing to East End Community School students through the school’s Rise and Shine program.

Sarah Braunstein has had a short story published in “The New Yorker,” and will be teaching fiction writing at Colby College. She teaches Power Pens, a creative writing class, to East End students once a month as part of the Rise and Shine program, through which parents like Braunstein are invited to share their skills and knowledge with students.

East End’s Rise and Shine program provides additional learning opportunities for students. It takes place in the  mornings before the start of regular classes. Staff and community partners organize and lead activities that can include Zumba and other types of wellness activities; extra support in math and reading; project-based learning; learning in the visual and performing arts; and community service.

In an article published in the Bangor Daily News about Braunstein and her work with students, East End Principal Marcia Gendron praised Braunstein for bringing “the author’s craft into the classroom.”
