Board to Vote on Budget, School Start/End Times
Posted on 03/26/2015

At a special meeting at Casco Bay High School on Tuesday, March 31, the Portland Board of Public Education will vote on recommending the FY2016 school budget to the City Council. The school board also is slated to vote on new school start and end times for the 2015-2016 school year.

The board held a public hearing and took a first reading vote on the proposed FY2016 school budget on Tuesday, March 24.

The board’s next meeting on the budget is on March 31, at which time the board will vote on recommending the budget to the City Council. The $102,776,657 budget that Portland Superintendent Emmanuel Caulk has proposed contains an expenditure increase of less than $1.2 million or 1.2 percent.

That meeting will be held in room 250 of Casco Bay High School, located at 196 Allen Avenue. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m.

Prior to its meeting, the School Board will hold a public hearing from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. regarding proposed changes in school start and end times. The schedule changes are designed to accommodate 20 more minutes of student learning time that will be added to each school day, beginning this fall.

Following that public hearing, the School Board will vote on the proposed schedule changes, which are accompanied by a plan to have Portland METRO buses transport high school students to and from classes. The School Board on March 3 authorized Portland Superintendent Emmanuel Caulk to develop a cost-sharing agreement with that bus service.

The latest draft of the proposed new start and end times is included in the board’s agenda packet for the March 31 meeting. The agenda and packet can be accessed here or by going to the Board of Education link on the district’s website, www.portlandschools.org, and clicking on the “Current Meeting Packet” link.
