The Portland Board of Public Education held a special ceremony prior to the board’s June 16 business meeting to recognize 29 Portland Public Schools’ employees who recently chose to retire.

Those retiring have served the district for a combined total of more than 700 years. The retirees include administrators, teachers, educational technicians, secretaries, a nurse, a social worker, a bus driver, a custodian and Central Office staff.

Among those retiring is King Middle School language arts teacher Karen MacDonald, Maine's 2014 Teacher of the Year. MacDonald and other state Teachers of the Year were honored for their accomplishments by President Barack Obama in a White House ceremony in May 2014. MacDonald has served the Portland Public Schools for 37 years.

Two assistant principals also are among the retirees: Louise Moses, assistant principal at Lyman Moore; and James Moses, assistant principal at Deering High School. The two are husband and wife. Louise Moses has served the district for 40 years and James Moses has been with the Portland Public Schools for six years.

The school board and Jeanne Crocker, Portland Public Schools’ director of school management, thanked the retirees for their years of dedicated service to students and the district.

Not all the retirees were able to attend the ceremony but those that did posed for a photograph with school board Chair Sarah Thompson and school officials.
