The Portland Board of Public Education at its June 16 meeting recognized Carolyn Cohen, a physical education teacher for Ocean Avenue and Presumpscot elementary schools, for her outstanding dedication and service.

“She serves as a positive role model epitomizing personal health and fitness,” said Jeanne Crocker, the district’s director of school management.

Cohen, who has worked for the Portland Public Schools for 23 years, organizes and helps set up healthy activities for students and staff outside of class time. She is the chair of the Ocean Avenue wellness team and also organizes staff wellness activities. Carolyn has also created a running club, which includes up to 50 students that get together one day a week before school.

“She does these things out of the kindness her heart and a desire to see others healthy and fit,” Crocker said.

Cohen is a champion for the 5-2-1-0 school plan and a true advocate for the schools’ wellness policies. She has written and won several grants to bring resources to Portland Public Schools’ teachers to increase movement through-out the school day.

“Tonight we recognize her for her commitment and dedication to helping both students and staff as she works with them to develop and maintain a fit and healthy lifestyle,” Crocker said.
