The recent second annual Hyper Heart 5k Race at Lyman Moore Middle School raised $2,500, an increase over the $1,000 raised the first year.

The race took place on May 30. It is a local event created by two Moore eighth-graders, Karina Boothe and Lauren Paradise, to raise funds for research and awareness for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), a heart condition that involves a thickened heart muscle and that has affected their families.

HCM is a rare disorder that often is not discovered until after a person passes away. Lauren’s aunt was diagnosed with HCM after collapsing and being revived in 1999 at the age of 44; Karina’s mother passed away from HCM in 2006 at the age of 39.

Both girls worked together on a class project focusing on the disease and their enthusiasm led them to organize the race last year, which was so successful it has become an annual event.

Proceeds from the race support the American Heart Association to cover testing, research, and treatment expenses for HCM.

“We had such positive results last year that we were excited about it growing this year and making even more of a difference,” Lauren said. “The support and participation from the school was so much more this year.  It’s really nice to see this event become an annual event and more of a school activity, whereas last year it was basically just the two of us doing most of the work. We got so much help from the school administration, teachers, staff and students, as well as the general community.”

She added, “Social studies teacher, Miss [Caroline] Foster, really inspired us to do this race, and we hope it will continue to grow.”

Sponsors and donors included Kohl’s; Cumberland County Federal Credit Union; Equinox; Evergreen Credit Union; PeoplesChoice Credit Union; Town & Country Federal Credit Union; Tricorp Federal Credit Union; Brian Gilbert Associates; and Dunkin’ Donuts.
