Lyseth School recently held its second annual ELL (English language learner) Family Literacy Night in the school's library and art room. One popular feature at the May 27 event was a new puppet theater built by students at the Portland Arts and Technology High School.

ELL students in kindergarten through grade 5 and their family members played word games, tested their skills in vocabulary concentration, and read examples of student work. In addition, students showed their families websites that they use in school to help them strengthen their reading and speaking skills. The literacy night was organized by Lyseth ELL teacher Linda Stimpson and was supported by a grant from Donor's Choose.

The students were very eager to try out the new puppet theater, built by students in instructor Jill Irving woodworking class at PATHS, supported by a Portland Education Foundation grant.

The project involved creating portable puppet theaters and seating for anyone in the Portland school system to use. The students built two portable puppet theaters, one for the Lyseth art room and the other to be loaned out using the library sign-out system.

The theaters come with twelve folding campstools with fabric seats that have batik designs created by Lyseth art teacher Ellen Handelman’s students.
