Portsmouth Naval Shipyard to Present STEM Expo at PATHS
Posted on 02/26/2015

Through a variety of demonstrations on topics that include sonar, welding and how a submarine escape suit is designed, students at the Portland Arts and Technology High School (PATHS) will get to learn on Tuesday, March 3, how science and technology are used in real life at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

A team of 30 that will include engineers, divers, sonar techs, sailors and other personnel from the U.S. Navy shipyard in Kittery will be presenting a STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) expo at PATHS from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. that day. The team will conduct 10 different workshops that will exhibit real-life applications of STEM and also give students a sense of  life at the shipyard.

“The purpose of the day is to show students some of the career opportunities that exist in STEM-related fields and encourage interested students to pursue higher education and/or careers in a STEM-related field,” said Michael Johnson, director of PATHS.

PATHS students will take different workshops that closely relate to the industry they’re studying. Even culinary students will find workshops tied to their field of study. For example, there will be an ice-cream making demonstration, during which students will learn about chemistry, energy transfer and molecular structure. And they’ll learn about material strength in a delicious “chocolate asphalt” workshop.

Among other workshops, health science students will learn about the physics of deep sea diving and automotive technology students will learn about naval nuclear power.

The Portland Public Schools’ PATHS – Portland Arts and Technology High School – is located at 196 Allen Avenue and was constructed in 1976 as the Greater Portland region’s first vocational school dedicated to training and certifying students in various industries. Since then, PATHS has evolved into a school that offers a wide variety of programs that include mechanical training, construction training of all types, an Arts Academy, and programs related to the service industry, including health science occupations and culinary training.
