The February edition of the "Let's Talk Portland!" Web show features a student and his mentor in the Multilingual Center's Make It Happen! program. Make It Happen! is a language acquisition, academic advocacy, and college readiness program that pairs English language learners with volunteer mentors known as academic coaches.

“They try to push you, push you to the point where you’re doing everything you can to utilize the resources around you,” said Deering High School senior Stephen Ochan, explaining how the program has aided him. “…It helps you learn how to use those resources to be successful at the next level.”

The "Let's Talk Portland" Web series features interviews that Portland Public Schools Superintendent Emmanuel Caulk does with guests each month about initiatives in the Portland Public Schools.

For the latest edition, Caulk interviewed Stephen; Stephen’s volunteer academic coach, Theo Dunfey; and Tim Cronin, Make it Happen! Program Coordinator.

Cronin told the superintendent that Make It Happen! helps students “navigate the academic landscape in the schools.”

Dunfey said that in addition to the reward of helping students succeed academically, “I really, really value the friendship [with students] that we develop as coaches.”
