Each year, sixth-grade  students and staff  from Lyman Moore Middle School and seventh-grade students and staff from King Middle School attend a two-night, three-day overnight experience at The Leadership School at Kieve on Damariscotta Lake in Nobleboro. Students learn team building, relationship and communication skills, and decision making at the residential experiential education programs at the school.

An extension program is now in place at Moore and King. The new Educator-in-Residence program, in which Kieve educators are spending 10 weeks at the two middle schools, will help reinforce what the students learn from their Leadership School experience.

While at The Leadership School, students empower themselves with physical challenges on the ropes course and climbing wall and thought-provoking activities focused on teambuilding, relationships, decision making and communication skills.

Now, in hopes of broadening and deepening the impact of the trip to Kieve, King and Lyman Moore middle schools have welcomed Leah Yacknin-Dawson and Sam Copland, Kieve-Wavus educators, into their schools for a 10-week residency.

From January until March, the two educators will support teachers and students in reinforcing the messages, learning style and relationships built during residential Leadership School programs. At Lyman Moore, Yacknin-Dawson will work closely with Assistant Principal Louise Moses and Teaching Strategist Sarah Hines to spread messages of kindness and respect among students and support healthy classroom behavior.

“Having an Educator in Residence from Kieve supports our belief that there is a leader in every student,” Moses said. “We are excited to have Leah with us to help us define and strengthen every student’s unique leadership qualities in a positive way.”

At King Middle School, Copland will work closely with Rhonda Janelle, King’s physical education teacher. “King is very excited to participate in the Leaderships School EIR program again this year. We look forward to Sam bringing a renewed focus to the valuable work KMS seventh graders started this fall while at The Leadership School,” Janelle said.
