Professional actors from Portland Stage put on an abridged version of “Romeo and Juliet” this fall for eighth-graders at Lincoln Middle School, courtesy of Culture Club-Portland. The students say seeing just that short version of the play made them want to see the whole thing.

A Portland Stage video in which some students shared their impression of the experience can be viewed here. Portland Stage filmed the play for the National Endowment of the Arts and videotaped interviews with six students following the performance.

The play, performed on Sept. 23 in the school’s gym, was fully Shakespearean in language, tone and content.  The actors played multiple parts in the play using minimal sets and subtle costume changes.

The following day, students also got to experience an acting workshop in their English language arts classes led by the actors. The workshop was very interactive, allowing time for each student to speak, listen to and perform lines of Shakespearean text.

Culture Club-Portland is a collaborative program between the Portland Museum of Art, the Portland Symphony Orchestra, Portland Ovations and Portland Stage to deliver accessible, consistent, diverse, high quality arts experiences to students. Funded by an anonymous donor, the goal of Culture Club-Portland is to provide consistent access to the partnering institutions and their programs to every K-12 student in the Portland Public Schools to build a lifelong relationship with the arts and to embrace these vital resources.

Administered by the Portland Education Foundation, Culture Club-Portland ensures that each student in the Portland Public Schools district can participate in at least one program per year offered by each of the partners, resulting in each student in the district having four unique arts experiences every year.

More information is at www.cultureclubportland.com and also on the websites of the four partner organizations.
