Statement from Interim Superintendent Jeanne Crocker
Posted on 12/16/2015

Portland Public Schools Interim Superintendent Jeanne Crocker issued the following statement on Wednesday, Dec. 16:

"Earlier today a Portland High School art teacher was arrested by the Maine State Police on suspicion that he viewed child pornography on his home computer. The Portland Public Schools had no prior information about this investigation or charge before the state police arrived at the school to speak with the teacher this morning. We are not aware of any allegations or evidence that the teacher engaged in any such activity while in school or while using school computers or networks. State police do not believe that any Maine children were depicted in the images they found.

The teacher has been placed on administrative leave effective immediately, pending further developments in this matter.

We are communicating with staff and parents of Portland High School to inform them of what we know and we will continue to communicate with parents to alleviate any concerns.

We will provide ongoing support to staff, students and families as needed through the process to ensure that all of our students feel and are safe at school.

We, of course, will cooperate fully with the authorities, and we are always mindful of putting the best interests of our students first."
