A group of Portland High School JMG students has raised more than $500 for The Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital as a community service project.

JMG stands for Jobs for Maine’s Graduates (JMG), a statewide nonprofit that works within Maine’s public schools to help students reach their fullest potential.

Arthur Mosen, a JMG specialist at Portland High School, said the students raised the money for the hospital in a short window of time between Thanksgiving and Dec. 18. “We raised a total of $532 for the hospital,” Mosen said. “It was a great success!”

He explained how the project came about:

“A group of my JMG students took an interest in doing a community service project that involved helping children in the hospital and we started raising money during the week of Thanksgiving. The Barbara Bush Children's Hospital was chosen because we knew that children were getting treatment there and it is local and easy to take the METRO to get there.

All PHS students and staff were encouraged to donate, but a small group of my JMG students were the ones organizing the project and going around the school to collect donations. Our goal from the start was simple: for students to identify a cause that they care about and to perform a community service act that will allow them to engage with the people they are helping. The collecting of money was 100-percent student-led.

All I did was to facilitate via email with the hospital to arrange our visit and provided materials for the students to do a craft project with the kids. The craft itself was chosen by the students and they performed the activity with patients at the hospital.”
