At its regular meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 8, the Portland Board of Public Education is expected to continue to discuss some proposed additional locally funded options for the planned new state-funded replacement of Hall Elementary School. The board will then take a vote regarding recommending them to the City Council.

The board’s business meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m. in room 250 of Casco Bay High School, located at 196 Allen Avenue. A 6 p.m. board workshop will precede the business meeting.

At a previous workshop on Nov. 17, the board began discussing the locally funded options for the construction of Hall Elementary School.

The Portland Public Schools is continuing to work through the state’s 21-step process for the replacement of Fred P. Hall Elementary School. The hope is to have a referendum on the project go before Portland voters in the spring of 2016.

The state will pay for a replacement school, estimated to cost at least $25 million, but the Hall School Building Committee has come up with nine possible upgrades that would have to be funded locally.

The upgrades would improve education and energy efficiency, enhance security and reduce the cost of stormwater management. They range from having the project be LEED certified as a “green” building to expanding the size of the school’s gymnasium.

A straw poll on the Hall School Concept Plan will be held at the school on Wednesday, Dec. 16 at 6 p.m. to give the public additional opportunity to weigh in on the project. Another straw poll was held September, when community members voted to endorse the site plan for the project. The straw polls are non-binding and conducted to advise the state regarding local support for the project.

More information on the Hall School locally funded options can be found in the school board’s current meeting packet. That packet can be viewed on the district’s website, www.portlandschools.org, by going to the “Board of Education” tab and clicking on “Current Meeting Packet,” or by clicking here.
