Sweet! PATHS Student Creates Winning Slogan for Candy Company
Posted on 10/07/2014

PORTLAND, Maine (Oct. 7, 2014) – Joshua Kennie, a second-year commercial art student at Portland Arts & Technology High School (PATHS), has won the Haven's Candies Sticker Tagline Contest for the 100 year anniversary of Maine’s oldest chocolatier.

Josh, whose sending school is Bonny Eagle High School in Standish, designed the new tagline: “Keeping Maine Sweet for 100 Years!”

The company is using the new slogan on its website and on stickers for all its packaging.

Andy Charles, outgoing Haven’s owner, said the company was delighted to tap into the creativity and innovation of the Portland Public School’s PATHS students in the contest. Charles said the contest also gave the students a chance “to make a real-world connection between what they do in the classroom and what actually happens.”

Haven’s was founded in Portland in 1915. Today, it has stores in Portland and Scarborough and a factory and store in Westbrook. Charles, who bought the company in 2001 and recently sold it Erin Collins of Freeport, said the company turned 99 this month so the centennial celebration has already begun and will extend into 2015.

Collins and Charles recently attended a small ceremony at PATHS at which Josh received a certificate making him an honorary graphics artist for Haven’s and a basket of Haven’s treats.

Charles said Haven’s challenged PATHS students last spring to come up with a tagline for the anniversary. The company had 20 to 30 impressive submissions but it chose Josh’s simple but effective tagline as the best to exemplify what Haven’s has been doing for the past century, Charles said.

Charles said the partnership between Haven’s and PATHS benefited both the company and students. “It’s got to be collaborative if we’re all going to rise together,” he said.
