Reiche School's Fun 5K Set for Oct. 19
Posted on 10/14/2014

The Portland Public School’s Reiche Community School will hold its Seventh Annual Reiche International 5K Run/Walk on Sunday, Oct. 19. The fun community event, for which participants are invited to wear costumes, begins at 9:30 a.m. at the Reiche Community School, located at 166 Brackett St. in Portland’s West End.

All proceeds from the event will go to fund school enrichment programs for Reiche students that take place before, during and after school. Physical enrichment activities and programs in arts, languages, theatre and sciences are made possible from this event.

This year’s theme is “Things you Find in a Garden.” Participants are urged to wear costumes but they are not mandatory. Additionally, the race will once again feature a centipede division where three or more closely attached runners participate as a team.

“The Reiche International 5K was initially organized as a fundraiser to provide the opportunity for all Reiche's students, many whom had never been in a pool, to learn to swim. Its success has not only enriched our students’ experiences but also has grown into a well-loved, fun-filled community event,” said Jeanne Swanton, Reiche PTO board member.

The race starts and ends at Reiche Community School. The well-marked, single loop course begins on Brackett Street and continues through the streets of the West End, including Chadwick, Neal, Pine and Spring Streets. The USA Track & Field-certified course is flat and fast and only includes one climb.

The Oct. 1 pre-registration deadline to receive discounted pricing has been extended. The cost to enter is $20 for adults and $12 for kids; $30 for adults and $20 for kids closer to race date. Registration includes a quality t-shirt designed by local Portland artist, Blue Butterfield.

To register, visit www.reicheinternational.com. Packet pick-up for the race is on race day from 8 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. Same day registration is also available.
