Creative works from Portland Public Schools students and other students from around Maine will be on display at the Portland Museum of Art beginning Friday, March 1, during Youth Art Month.

This month-long multimedia exhibition, sponsored by Maine Art Education Association, highlights Youth Art Month, a national celebration sponsored by the Council for Art Education. The annual celebration emphasizes the value of art education for all children and encourages support for quality art programs in Maine schools. This event marks 25 years of collaboration between the Portland Museum of Art and the Maine Art Education Association to celebrate student creativity from pre-kindergarten to grade 12.

Among PPS students participating this year, their artwork and their art teachers, are:

Sam Kemmerer, senior, Portland High School, oil painting titled “Osiris;” art educator: Barbara Loring

Isabelle Millette, sophomore, Deering High School, embroidered fabric artwork; art educator: Kathryn Robertson

Autumn Heil, Portland Arts & Technology High School and Gorham High School, water color titled "Seaweed;" art educator: Diane Manzi

Mikhail Savov, fifth grade, Reiche Community School, self portrait in pastel; art educator: Allison Villani

Kaden Deering, fourth grade, Longfellow Elementary School, Zendoodle in micron pen; art educator: Emily Serway

Dezzi Louisos-Daniels, fourth grade, Lyseth Elementary School, cut paper illustration titled “Cabeza de Tomate;” art educator: Christina Williams

Brooklyn Conley, first grade, Ocean Avenue Elementary School, watercolor resist/collage; art educator: Sally Mitchell

Guest speakers for the event include representatives from the Portland Museum of Art and honorees as named by the Maine Art Education Association. This year’s Maine Art Education Association Award for Excellence in Art Advocacy recognizes Waterfall Arts for long-standing support of arts education and youth creativity. Teacher Holly Houston from Yarmouth High School will be speaking as the Maine Art Education Association’s 2019 Art Educator of the Year.

The exhibition runs from March 1 through April 1 on the lower ground floor of the museum. The celebratory opening reception is Saturday, March 2, from 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Presentation of certificates will start with pre-kindergarten to third grade at 4:30 p.m., fourth to seventh grade at 5:30 p.m., and eighth to 12th grade at 6:30 p.m.

Please consider scheduling your arrival to allow time to enjoy the exhibition and the museum's collection. The galleries close at 6 p.m. Admission to the Youth Art Month exhibition is free the day of the opening for Youth Art Month participants, their families, and teachers.
