Christopher Reiger is the Portland Public Schools’ new Director of Clinical and Behavioral Support Services, and will be leading the implementation of the district’s social emotional learning (SEL) strategy.

Reiger joined the district on Oct. 17. He holds a doctorate in clinical psychology and also is a PBIS (positive behavioral interventions and supports) coach and a SWIS (school-wide information system) facilitator.

His appointment was announced recently by Melea Nalli, the district’s Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning, who said the district is very excited to have him on board.

“Chris comes to us with deep expertise,” Nalli said. “He has experience in day treatment, clinical supervision, with SEL, and trauma sensitive practices. Most recently, he has been coaching school and district leaders around their SEL and PBIS strategies. In fact, Chris has coached other directors of SEL/clinical supports, including in districts that were just building out this districtwide function. He’s excited to bring all that he has learned to our community and to support us with a sustainable strategy that supports all students in proactive and responsive ways.”

Reiger earned his doctor of philosophy degree from Miami University, an American Psychological Association accredited program in clinical psychology. He also holds a master’s degree in clinical psychology from Miami University and a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Northwestern University. His nearly two decades of experience includes being a family therapist and a school-based psychotherapist.

Reiger replaces Brian Cavanaugh, who left the district in the last school year.
