Wednesday, May 8, is National Bike to School Day. Many schools, including Lincoln Middle School, turn the event into a Bike & Walk to School Day, when students who ride the bus will get off the bus and walk with teachers to school.

In attendance at Lincoln also will be Beacon the puffin, mascot of the Maine Mariners, Portland’s new minor-league hockey team. Beacon will be in attendance from 7:20 a.m. to 7:40 a.m. on the front lawn greeting students as they arrive at school, which starts at 7:45 a.m.

The first-ever National Bike to School Day took place on May 9, 2012, in coordination with the League of American Bicyclists’ National Bike Month. The day is designed to encourage road safety as children safely bicycle or walk to school.

The event builds on the popularity of Walk to School Day, which is celebrated across the country – and the world – each October. Many communities and schools have been holding spring walk and bicycle to school events for years.
