Eighth-grade students in the Matinicus House at King Middle School are conducting a donation drive to collect food, warm clothing and bedding and basic kitchen items for the city’s most vulnerable citizens. The drive began earlier this month and runs through the first week of December. All donations can be brought to King, located at 92 Deering Avenue, and dropped off in the lobby.

King is an expeditionary learning school that is part of the EL Education network. The Matinicus 8 students are participating in an ongoing “Freedom from Want” community service experience for their Four Freedom Expedition. In that expedition, they are exploring the concepts of freedom depicted in Norman Rockwell’s famous painting of the four freedoms – Freedom from Want, Freedom from Fear, Freedom of Speech and Freedom of Worship – that was inspired by President Franklin Roosevelt’s State of the Union speech in 1941.

The students’ community service activity began the first week of November and runs until the culminating event in the first week of December. During this month-long community service experience, the students’ goal is to gather resources for Portland's most vulnerable citizens. They hope that students, parents, guardians, and community members will donate items to this cause and reach out to family, friends, and neighbors and ask them to do the same.

“It is an important time for all of us in the greater Portland community to make sure all of those in our community have shelter, clothing, and food to get them ready for the winter,” the students said, in a letter to the community.

During parent conference times, there will be tables for families to drop off or take items. Parents, guardians, and community members can drop off items during the school day or send items in with a student in the morning.

Students and teachers at King are in charge of receiving, sorting, categorizing and distributing the donated items. The following list of items is not an all-inclusive list, but a place to start:
